Course Description: Effective leadership is challenging in the best of times. But in times of rapid change or crisis when external circumstances are fluid, unpredictable, and unprecedented, capable leaders must call upon extraordinary skills as they handle their own stress and anxiety while creating space for the needs of their team. Leadership at these times requires more than just technical capability. It also requires empathy, vulnerability, and authenticity.  Less visible but of equal importance are a capacity for internal resilience, stamina, and centeredness.

Leaders who help others feel seen and heard are better able to inspire confidence and motivate productive action, and therefore better able to position their organizations and teams to adjust, grow, adapt, and even thrive through uncertain times. Likewise, qualities such as vulnerability and authenticity, when shown to be genuine and unrehearsed, build affiliation and team cohesion, enhancing an organization’s capacity for resiliency and success.

This webinar aims to deepen participants’ leadership capabilities by providing tools to develop both a mindset for effective empathy and the skills necessary to demonstrate empathy.  We will challenge common assumptions about leadership by exploring vulnerability and authenticity as qualities that empower others and promote desired outcomes.  

The webinar will offer a cognitive framework to enhance participants' ability to both feel and demonstrate authentic empathy. Participants also will be encouraged to recognize ways in which the challenges of both the global COVID-19 pandemic and calls for racial justice have affected their own capacity to lead and remain resilient.  The program combines lecture, video, guided reflection and skill-building exercises with opportunities for participant interaction.

 At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will:

  • Have an increased understanding of the influence of empathy, vulnerability, and authenticity on outcomes

  • Gain a heightened self-awareness of their own capacity to express empathy, vulnerability, and authenticity as a leader

  • Develop skills that enlarge their own capacity for empathy, vulnerability, and authenticity as a leader

  • Learn approaches to self-refection and self-care that make leadership in times of change, challenge, and crisis sustainable

  • Acquire strategies to address the challenges of demonstrating empathy, vulnerability, and authenticity remotely
